The Hidden Meanings of Colors

Dr. Max Lüscher, a Swiss psychologist, developed a way of examining the connotations of specific colors and their relationship to different traits. People naturally associate specific feelings to color. Lüscher says there are four "psychological primary colors."

  1. Blue: Represents a need for tranquility.

  2. Green: Persistent, obstinate, and self-centered.

  3. Orange-Red: Excitable and assertive.

  4. Yellow: Extroverted, optimistic, and joyful.

A few more examples of color with their attached feelings include:

Purple: violet or purple combines the energy and strength of red with the stability of blue. It represents nobility, power, ambition, and luxury, but also symbolizes extravagance. This color is often associated with dignity, independence, magic, and wisdom.

White: White is pure, light, and innocent. Because of these connotation, white is generally positive and associated with charitable organizations.

Black: Black is elegant and powerful. This color can be tricky because it appears formal and dignified but can also be associated with death. In many contexts black can be very negative, but when done right it can denote prestige.
